Joseph Dufton was born
1842, he appears on
the 1851 and 1861 census living at Hutton in the Forest. He married Agnes Sanderson in 1864 and they
have two children born 1865 and 1868. Agnes appears on the 1871
census, she is recorded as married, and is staying with an aunt.
The two children John and Charlotte are staying with their
grandparents. The elusive Joseph is not on the 1871 census.
Agnes remarries in 1880, and in 1884 Charlotte marries, her marriage
certificate states that her father Joseph is deceased. All the
indications are that Joseph died about 1870, but there are no records
of his death.
However, in 1892 Joseph's uncle, Richard Dufton, leaves a third of his
estate to Joseph in his will. Richard lived locally, and was in
a situation to know all about Joseph. So why leave an
inheritance to a nephew that has died? |

George Dufton was born at
Haydon Bridge in 1814, he was the son of Thomas Dufton and Mary
Dobinson. There is no further record of George until the baptism
of his daughter Grace at Kirklinton in 1833, his wife is listed as
Mary. They are newly arrived at Kirklinton and the records
indicate that they are from Ivegill, the home of his parents some
thirty years previous. Where did they go? As there is no further
record of the family. |

In 1838 James Dufton,
